INTO THE UNKNOWN (2011)

(Robin Randall & Bill LaFleur)

This is an introspective song about life’s uncertainty and moving through the changes. Bill’s arrangement and Bill and Eric Corne’s production create a dreamy musical journey of reverie and muse. Matt Salmon’s vocal is soothing and smooth and that fits the melody perfectly.

ISOBEL (1986)

(Robin & Judithe Randall)

This is written based on a  real legend well-known to natives of Northern California. Many years ago in the late 50’s Judithe worked at a radio station in San Francisco, and read about this story. She did not remember the actual name of the girl in the story, so she named her Isobel. I was fascinated by this “ghost” story and when she told me about this, I said, well this needs to be a song. The actual track was recorded back in my high school days, those who played on it were my friends, fresh out of Hollywood High School. The track was initially written for a film called Wind River, but was not used. I thought about the track, and how eerily, beautiful it was, despite no click track at the time, 8 track recording, but we decided to use it. Diana DeWitt’s vocal is hauntingly beautiful, yet bone-chilling at the same time. Craig Hara’s flugelhorn adds to the mysterious feeling. Kitchen Sync Studios was the first real studio I ever recorded in.

IT’S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME (1995)

(Robin & Judithe Randall)

Written for Baywatch about when Mitch’s mom goes missing on Venice Beach and ends up getting mugged and her purse stolen. She couldn’t remember where she was since she had a new diagnosis of Alzheimers. There’s a tense feeling to this track. It’s got a great groove set by Guy Marshall, and Steve Zell sings with much range and force! Aina came in and lent some cool whispers and screams adding to the intensity of the track.

IT’S ONLY FEAR (1990)

(Nancy Krasn Gumbiner, Robin Randall, Kristina Nichols)

(From Nancy) – I had been working with a wonderful, beautiful, power singer, Kristina. She had everything it takes to be a star. So, aside from hiring her for our demos, I thought it would be a good idea to include the line Kristina wrote “love can’t climb your fences”. She did not become famous, but she will always be a star to me. (From Robin) - I wrote the music to Nancy & Kristina’s lyrics. Kristina was a rock singer, and so it definitely had to be AOR style and I came up with a piano riff to start it. Most who know me, know I use modulations in my music a lot, and this proved to be true here too. The modulation really made the Chorus lift, I think. This has a dark, moody yet powerful vibe going on.

JUST FRIENDS (1984)(1st version)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Jeff Law)

I was in “Heartbreak Land” at the time. I started the melody and showed it to Jeff, he came in with the “Just Friends” melody of the chorus. I had a lot of the lines of the lyrics as that’s how I was feeling, showed the ideas to Judithe and Jeff and we put the rest together. It ended up on the soundtrack of the film “Dead As A Doorman” starring Bradley Whitford. It encompasses when someone breaks up with you and says, we can still be friends, but for the person who never wanted to break up, it’s a hard thing to do.

KEEP RUNNING (2003)

(Robin & Judithe Randall)

Judithe wrote this lyric back in the 1970’s. It was unfinished so I had to finish it and updated it.

I wrote the music and asked Diana to do a piano/vocal. Then, my former MI student and American Idol finalist, Brooke White, did a version and loved the song and wanted to put it on her record. Producer Tim Simms produced a track around the piano/vocal. Judithe never got to hear this, but I am so glad her lyric came to life on this cool, melancholy track.

LEARN TO LET YOU GO (1986)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Jeff Law)

Jeff Law once said to me “Robin, you need to get your heart broken again so we can write some more songs!”  This lyric definitely comes out of real life experience. Jeff came in with the verse melody, but he didn’t like his chorus. He said, “Robin, you’re always the Queen of key changes” and asked me what I would do for the chorus. I did not disappoint here. The lyrics were a collaboration of the 3 of us. Steve Zell sings with such emotion, it cuts to your heart all the way.

LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE (1986)

LETTING GO (2008)

(Robin Randall & Bill LaFleur)

This grooving, soulful track Bill created around Vanessa Bryan’s powerful vocals, harks back to a great era of R&B in the 70’s. I love that music era! The song is about releasing one’s self from a relationship that you want, but know is not good for you. The groove is infectious! Bill’s lyrics to my music was the perfect match and his production makes you want to dance!

LIFE IS FOR LIVING (2007)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Bill LaFleur)

Judithe had written a poem. After she passed away, I was going through her work, and thought it would make a good song. I showed it to Bill and we made a lyric out of it and put it to music and recorded a demo with Diana. When I got back in touch with John Francis, as he was releasing Edge of The Blade’s record, we spoke about him and Alan Kelly covering a song and this is their version. I only wish that Judithe could hear it, but maybe somewhere in heaven, she will!

LONG WAY FROM LOVE (1989)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Jonny Bloch)

Jonny Bloch was a student of mine at Dick Grove, and had this one song he was working on with this sort of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” piano riff. I thought it was very strong. He was open to Judithe and I coming on as co-writers and Judithe put her Judithe lyrical genius to work. I came on the melody and chords and together we created this title song to what would be the Marcie Free title track. Aina, also, did a wonderful version of this song, which will finally now be released!

LOOK LOVE IN THE EYES (1987)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Monique Topolski)

Monique came to LA from the East Coast to pursue music. She also was Claude’s cousin. She had a song called “Romeo Dreams” and it became “Look Love In The Eyes” in another life. I’m trying to remember how it all morphed into that, but I know we all worked together and this cool AOR rock song came out of it. I love the drum groove Tommy made, which drives it, and that riff Paul is playing on the guitar also makes it signature for this song. Marcie and Diana are the vocal finishing touches that truly fire this song up!

(Judithe Randall & Robert Tepper)

LOVE COMES WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT (2006)

(Robin Randall & Bill LaFleur )

The title says it all on what this is about. If we could’ve had a cover with Carly Simon, that would be on the bucket list, but Sarah Olson does a wonderful vocal here. The thoughtful arrangement and Kevin Campos echoing the backing vocals has that singer songwriter “I live in Laurel Canyon” vibe to it. Yay!!

LOVE FOREVER STORY (1987)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, James Christian)

This song was written with James Christian. He came out to LA per Judithe’s request. She really was taken with James and when Judithe put her mind to something or someone, there’s no stopping that train. A good old fashioned love story lyric, sometimes the “Hollywood Ending” is a good thing! The melodies for this song were really unique and a breath of fresh air. The soaring chorus is so perfect for James’ incredible range and having Diana do a version too was more than I could hope for…well I’m over the moon on it! This song was given to Aina (Olsen) via my former student and artist in her own right, Kari Iveland, which began a very long friendship between Aina, Judithe and me. Aina had already cut the song when we found out about it. I love the demo version of this song and now it will finally be heard!

LOVE LOOKED INTO MY LIFE (1986)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Claude Gaudette)

Judithe wrote this lyric and gave it to me to do the music. I wrote the verses and chorus, but needed a bridge and showed it to Claude and he came up with a very interesting modulation and chords and we added melody over that. The song exists as a piano vocal and also a fully produced track. James Christian decided to put it on his solo record. Somewhere on a DAT I have, Bernadette Peters recorded this with Claude producing, but it never got released and sadly Claude passed away suddenly so we never knew what happened to the song after that.

LOVE SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS (1987)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Claude Gaudette)

With this song, I had the lyrics and the melody of the Chorus in my head, and showed it to

Judithe and then we worked on the verses. Claude and I then wrote the bridge music and gave that to Judithe to do the words. The song is about the unspoken chemistry when you don’t need to say anything, but you can feel it’s there.
